PARADISE CANYON TO HOST 104th PLAYING OF
CANADIAN MEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Lethbridge, Alta. (RCGA) Another chapter in the storied history of Canadian golf is set to be written as Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge, Alta. prepares to host the 104th playing of the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA).

Canada’s oldest national golf championship runs August 9-14 and will crown the county's top male amateur golfer. In all, 162 players will battle over seven days to see who will have their name etched onto the prestigious Earl Grey Trophy.

“We are delighted to bring Canada’s most prestigious amateur golf championship to Paradise Canyon Golf Resort,” said Brent McLaughlin, RCGA Director of Amateur Competitions. “The golf course is a true championship layout with a tremendous history of excellence.  The outstanding field of Canadian and international competitors is truly befitting the challenge and tradition of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship.”

In 2007, Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C. needed 38 holes at the Riverside Country Club in Saskatoon, Sask. to edged out Michael Knight of Calgary and capture Canada’s biggest amateur golf crown.  The 19-year old Taylor became only the second player to win the Canadian Junior Boy’s Championship and then follow it up by winning the Canadian Men’s Amateur title a year later. Brent Franklin of Calgary is the only other to have achieved that feat when earned his second junior title in 1984 and then captured his first of three amateur titles in 1985.

An Inter-provincial Team Championship for the Willingdon Cup will also take place in conjunction with the first two rounds of stroke play. The defending champions from Alberta will be looking to become the first province to win four consecutive Willingdon Cup titles.  Ontario had originally won four straight Willingdon Cups in 1938, ’39, ’46 and ’47 with 6-year layoff from 1940-45 due to war.
